Reactivating Debian Argentina (Community and new beginnings)
The process of reactivating the Debian Argentina community on the road to DebConf26.
The arrival of DebConf26 in Argentina is not just about organizing an international conference.
It also represents a unique opportunity to rebuild and strengthen the local community.
For a long time, the presence of Debian Argentina was, to put it mildly, limited: no active spaces, fragmented communication, and a scattered community.
We knew that in order to live up to a DebConf, this had to change.
🔄 A new beginning
The turning point came with the Site Visit.
What initially was a technical milestone quickly became something more: an opportunity to rebuild the community.
We decided not to limit ourselves to organizing the visit.
We wanted to create momentum, open spaces for connection, and bring together people interested in Debian once again.
🌐 Relaunching Debian Argentina
At the beginning of August, we relaunched our main communication channels:
We started sharing:
- progress updates on the road to DebConf26
- the logo contest
- events and talks
- ways to get involved
And the response was immediate.
In just a few days, we went from almost no presence to more than 140 people.
Today, across all platforms, the community has grown to over 200 members.
Beyond the numbers, what truly mattered was recovering something essential: the conversation.
🎤 Talks and community
As part of this process, we organized several talks and meetups:
- Buenos Aires — first space to reconnect and share
- Santa Fe — building connections with local actors and the tech community
- Nerdearla 2025 — a more mature version of the message
These activities were not only about explaining what Debian is, but also about showing how a global community works and how anyone can become part of it.
They also allowed us to connect with other actors in the ecosystem, such as cooperatives and organizations that share values aligned with free software.
🧱 Building towards DebConf26
Reactivating Debian Argentina was not an end in itself. It was (and still is) a necessary step to build something bigger.
DebConf26 will be a global meeting point, but its success also depends on the strength of the local community.
This process is just getting started.
And what matters most is not what we have already achieved, but everything that is still to be built.
Thank you to everyone who joined, participated, and helped bring this back to life.
